Ireland 1920. Some country people meet together to form an army of voluntary guerrillas and face the ruthless Black and Tans, the British troops who have been sent to crush the pro-independence aspirations of Ireland. Moved by a deepsense of duty and love for his country Damien gives up his promising studies inmedicine and joins up with his brother, Teddy in a violent struggle forliberty. When the struggle of the insurgents brings the British to a critical position, the two sides sign a treaty to bring an end to the bloodshed. But inspite of the apparent victory, civil war breaks out and the families which have been fighting shoulder to shoulder are torn apart and their members become enemies.
